Preview: UFC on ESPN 11 ‘Blaydes vs. Volkov’ Prelims
Robertson vs. Casey
Women’s Flyweights Gillian Robertson (7-4) vs. Cortney Casey (9-7)
ODDS: Robertson (-120), Casey (+100)
Casey’s move up to flyweight is an interesting gambit, and it remains to be seen whether or not it will pay off. There are pros and cons to the move. Casey’s combination of slow feet and fast hands mean she could probably be helped by being relatively quicker, but her size at strawweight was a clear advantage that helped see her through some fights. Casey had her UFC flyweight debut last month against Mara Romero Borella, and the results were inconclusive. Borella did have success bullying Casey against the fence, but the latter quickly latched on an armbar that finished the fight in short order. Casey is back just a month later against Robertson, who should not pose nearly the physical threat Borella did, though “The Savage” is tricky in her own right. Robertson is an aggressive submission artist and has run through the lower reaches of the flyweight division, but she has struggled with stronger athletes, particularly Maycee Barber in her last bout. Casey probably crosses that threshold, and if she can neutralize the best parts of Robertson’s game, she should be able to take advantage of her counterpart’s still-raw striking repertoire. The pick is Casey via decision.
