King of the Cage Canada had a great show in Halifax this weekend,
and there was some interesting news in the aftermath.
Cory MacDonald (Pictures) can be a major force at 170. In his match with Jonathan Goulet (Pictures) he showed a rare combination of size, power and skill, and it's unfortunate that he sustained his eye injury, as this bout could have been a great one.
With only the one round against a very skilled opponent like
Goulet, MacDonald proved that he's ready for high quality
opponents. Time will tell if his eye injury will hamper him and
block his road to a bright future.
Jonathan Goulet (Pictures) revealed that he has fired his manager Stephane Patry as a result of a few occasions where "The Road Warrior" felt that he wasn't getting the respect he deserved. Goulet and his trainer Steve Claveau (Pictures) also said that former UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre (Pictures) has also parted ways with Patry.
Black Mamba in K-1 Hero's
Vancouver's Kultar Gill (Pictures) will brave the typhoon currently hitting Tokyo to make his way to the Yokohama Arena and opponent Hideo Tokoro (Pictures) later today, in the K-1 Hero's 154 pound tournament.
The "Black Mamba", a member of the Revolution Fight Team, already has a win over his Japanese foe, as he scored a stunning KO by knee in the first minute of their bout last summer, but since then is on a three fight losing skid.
Still hope for Ricco Rodriguez (Pictures)
It appears that former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez (Pictures) might still have a shot at making his scheduled bout against Ron Waterman (Pictures) in Edmonton this weekend at the Hardcore Championship Fighting event at the River Cree Resort and Casino. Last Monday Canada Customs and Immigration revoked the bond that had been set up for him to enter the country. The reason is unknown.
HCF President Keith Crawford told MM-Eh! that as of right now they are not counting on having Rodriguez appear, but they have acquired the services of the Toronto based law firm that arranged for rap artist 50 Cent's entry into the country last year, so there is still a glimmer of hope.
"If Rodriguez can't make it into the country, then the main event duty will fall on the shoulders of Lethbridge, Alberta's Dan Chambers (Pictures) and UFC veteran Joe Riggs (Pictures). Word has it that if Riggs loses then he'll no longer be welcome in either the WEC or the UFC, and the opposite goes for Chambers; if he wins he'll get an invitation to the big show.
Also on the card will be Montreal's Nabil Khatib (Pictures) against The Ultimate Fighter veteran Solomon Hutcherson."
Denis Kang (Pictures) update
Kang, the dynamic Canadian middleweight who now trains with American Top Team in Florida, has been seeking a new place to fight ever since his contract with PRIDE expired. He told MM-Eh! that he's still unsigned and considers himself a free agent.
He added that he is currently in negotiations with several major organizations, but wouldn't reveal which one, if any, was a forerunner. Rumors have put Bodog at the head of the pack, but whoever does acquire Kang's services would definitely be getting someone who could be the face of their organization.
The "Crow" gets a new hat
Yet another dynamic Canadian middleweight, David Loiseau (Pictures) has joined with Steve Claveau (Pictures) to create the XR Challenge, an MMA event that will have its first card in Quebec City, Quebec on Sept. 7.
Most of the matchmaking is still being done now, but the main event will feature Jonathan Goulet (Pictures) against a to-be-determined opponent. Loiseau, still recovering from a broken hand, said that he had his cast removed a week and a half ago, and he'll probably be ready to fight by September, but he won't be on the first card.
He also revealed that he's been in contact with Shawn Tompkins (Pictures) and that he hopes to have several Team Tompkins members appear. This seems likely to happen considering the recent strained relationship between Tompkins and Stephane Patry, head of TKO, the major organization in Quebec.
Loiseau said that promoting events is a smart thing to do considering that life as a fighter can sometimes be short.
"I've always had that in mind, but Steve stepped up and proposed to be partners, and that was an offer that I couldn't refuse," Loiseau told Sherdog.com. "I'm a fighter and I'll be fighting, God willing for the next 10 years. I can't just rely on it."
Chris Horodecki (Pictures) to miss IFL Semi Finals
Undefeated lightweight sensation Chris Horodecki (Pictures) will miss his Los Angeles Anacondas meeting with the Quad City Silverbacks at the IFL semifinals on Aug. 2 due to a broken hand he sustained in his victory over Shad Lierley (Pictures) on June 1.
He was due to fight Bart Palaszewski (Pictures) in a rematch of their February bout in which Horodecki eked out a very close split decision.
New MMA event coming to Moncton
Moncton MMA fans have had to wait awhile to watch a live event in their city, as ECC 2 happened there over a year ago. Good news for them however, as former pro wrestler Johnny Powers plans on brining his new promotion there on Sept. 29. No match-ups have been announced.
