Matt “The Immortal” Brown has golden ambitions. | File Photo

This much is clear: Matt Brown wants a piece of Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Georges St. Pierre.

Once regarded as little more than an entertaining journeyman, Brown has rattled off six consecutive victories at 170 pounds and emerged as the unlikeliest of contenders. The 32-year-old Xenia, Ohio, native was in top form at UFC Fight Night 26 on Aug. 17, when he needed only 29 seconds to put away Mike Pyle with punches at the TD Garden in Boston. Afterward, Brown targeted St. Pierre and has continued to do so in the days following his most recent victory.

In a recent interview with MMAJunkie radio, Brown claimed he could not only beat St. Pierre but beat him where he has been at his best: “I know where my wrestling stands. It’s simply a matter of executing those abilities in the ring with GSP. I can outwrestle him. I’m calling it right now.”

According to FightMetric figures, St. Pierre holds the all-time UFC record for takedowns landed with 84 and takedown accuracy at 75 percent. He also ranks fifth in terms of takedown defense, having successfully defended 88 percent of the attempts against him. St. Pierre will defend his crown against Johny Hendricks in the UFC 167 main event on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas.
