Mike Whitman Joins Press Row

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by Sherdog news editor Mike Whitman.

With Matt Brown and Erick Silva headlining the UFC's Saturday night offering and the news that Brazilian brawler Fabio Maldonado would move up to heavyweight to replace former UFC champ Junior dos Santos against Stipe Miocic in the TUF Brazil 3 Finale, the Sherdog editors look at the changing face of UFC main events. While the UFC's expansive schedule has created much handwringing about card quality and appropriate main events, Breen and Whitman look at how five-round main events created classics out of fights like Mark Hunt-Antonio Silva and Chan Sung Jung-Dustin Poirier and have strengthened the brand of particular action fighters.

The duo also discuss the importance of fighters calling out their contemporaries and lobbying publicly for fights, as evidenced in Cole Miller landing a main event in Dublin against Irish hot prospect Conor McGregor or Bethe Correia's recent provocation of the “Four Horsewomen.” As well, Breen and Whitman reflect on the MMA prospects of late pro-wrestler Brian Pillman and whether or not the aforementioned Maldonado is the coolest fighter in the sport.
